This year, my Christmas decorations started with glittered tulle. I chose one spool each of apple green, red and white. They were really long, so I twisted them into a very loose sort of braid. This was just to have the colors alternate and to not lose my mind with such a long garland!.
I tied loose bows in the tulle every couple of feet to form big glittery clouds.
Then I just hung it across a closet door to get it up off the floor. I decided that I liked it there, so I made it a focal point in the room!
I grabbed the box my new vacuum cleaner came in and covered it with leftover cloth from my daughter's Halloween costume. Suddenly, I had a display table! :)
I also stuck a holographic poster board behind the lights and tinsel. Notice the pink stuffed owl behind the photo of my cute little niece on my make-shift "table?" :)
Finally, I attached a couple of tissue paper flowers I made to the wired tinsel. I just used the pipe cleaners I bound them with to attach them to the tinsel streamers.
The next target for decorating was my little makeshift bookcase sitting on a couple of card tables.
I also used the rule of three: grouping things into three or more makes them visually belong together as a collection. If you look closely, you can see a book about Charlie Brown on the top shelf. I grouped it with a Christmas murder mystery below it and a copy of A Christmas Carol.
Near the corner of the table, you see poinsettias in blue, red, white, and gold. These flowers were only 99 cents each at Walmart. There are also a couple of berry picks in red and blue. They were all stuck in between boxes displayed on a book stand to create height. I draped everything with streamers of 99 cent curling ribbon in gold, red, and green.
Next to the flowers, you see a stack of books used to display a glittery gold-wire Christmas tree. I curved a red poinsettia around the base of the tree. It is topped by curling ribbon streamers.
A set of three gift bags from Dollar Tree are displayed next to the gold tree. They stand in front of a gold toned holographic poster board that glows with warm tones of red, gold, and green. It also reflects the warm tones of the gold, red, purple, blue, and green miniature Christmas lights. I used one string of lights on the door and one string on the bookshelf. They were only about $3 each at Walmart.
The big black frames are displaying my daughter's photography. The subject of the photos is not Christmas related, but grouping them together creates visual interest while the glow of the Christmas lights make them appear festive. They also help to hide the not-so-festive objects behind them! :)
Notice how even individual jars of coconut oil and heads of garlic can become collections when they are stacked together. As a collection, individual objects become more interesting to the eye.
On the very corner of the table, you see the tissue paper flowers I made. I bought the tissue paper and pipe cleaners from Dollar Tree along with a foam wreath base. I tied the tissue flowers onto the wreath with the pipe cleaners that I used to bind them together. Then I placed two tissue flowers in the center of the wreath. You could even stack tissue flowers in a pyramid, using the foam ring as its base. This cone shape could represent a multicolored Christmas tree!
I wanted something shiny outside my door, but I did not want to buy an expensive wreath and have to figure out how to hang it between the wooden door and the storm door.
I thought of using a fast food cup holder! I bought some shiny tinsel bows at 2 for $1 and stuck one on each of three bumps on the underside of the cup holder. I rolled pieces of packing tape and stuck them to each bump to attach the bows. Since I only had three colors, I cut off the fourth bump. Then I clipped on a 99 cent blue poinsettia clip. I poked a hole in the top corner of the cup holder and strung a green pipe cleaner through the hole. Lastly, I twisted the pipe cleaner around the door knocker to hang my little wreath. You don't even notice the recycled gray cup holder!
You would almost think that it had electric lights the way that it sparkles. I love it! :)
If you have a collection of something, a great place to display it is on a little side table. I showed off my little collection of three angels on this small table. I bought one green, one purple, and one white shiny balloon anchor with shooting stars from Dollar Tree. I spread the stems apart to create a shooting star halo behind my angels. The other items you see, I already had around the house. I bought scented wax cubes from Walmart for about $2 to place in the dish. I also stretched curling ribbon across these decorations to make them even more festive. :)
For the staircase wall, I simply bought one red and one gold garland for a couple of dollars each from Walmart. Then I lightly twisted them together as I pinned them to the wall with push pins in a scalloped design.
For the window, I draped one red and one purple tinsel garland across the blinds for less than $2 each. They could be placed across curtains as well. I used push pins to secure them to the wall on either side. They came off the roll already curled and ready to hang. It was super easy! :)
